TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – A mass stabbing incident at a Walmart in Garfield Township, near Traverse City, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, left 11 people injured. Authorities quickly apprehended the suspect, 42-year-old Bradford James Gille, who allegedly used a folding knife in what officials described as a random act of violence. The incident prompted a significant emergency response and drew widespread concern, including from former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who resides in the area.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office reported that deputies arrived on the scene within three minutes of the initial 911 call. Sheriff Michael D. Shea credited crucial "citizen involvement" in subduing the assailant, with bystanders, including an armed citizen, playing a vital role in preventing further injuries before law enforcement took the suspect into custody. This swift action was instrumental in containing the attack.

Of the 11 victims, initial reports indicated six were in critical condition, but by Sunday, July 27, their conditions had improved, with seven now listed as fair and four as serious. Munson Medical Center confirmed encouraging signs of recovery among the patients. The FBI is assisting local authorities in the ongoing investigation into the motive behind the attack.

In a tweet, he stated, > "Along with the whole Traverse City community, Chasten and I are shaken by the awful and senseless violence at Walmart earlier today. We’re thinking of everyone affected and hoping and praying for speedy recovery for all those who were injured." His statement highlighted the community's shock and solidarity.

The attack, which occurred in a popular vacation spot, has left the Traverse City community grappling with an uncommon act of violence. The suspect, Bradford James Gille, is expected to face arraignment, with prosecutors considering terrorism charges due to the nature of the alleged attempt to instill fear in the community. Walmart issued a statement expressing concern for the injured and affirming its cooperation with law enforcement in the investigation.
