A recent survey conducted by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll reveals a significant embrace of artificial intelligence within the game development sector. The study, which polled 615 developers across the U.S., South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden in late June and early July 2025, highlights both the rapid adoption and persistent concerns surrounding AI technologies.

"A survey by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll finds 87% of game developers are using AI agents in their workflows; 63% expressed concerns about data ownership," stated Techmeme in a recent post summarizing the findings.

The widespread integration of AI agents is seen as a response to the gaming industry's evolving landscape, marked by rising development costs and a demand for more dynamic player experiences. An overwhelming 97% of surveyed developers believe AI is actively reshaping the industry, with 95% reporting that it helps reduce repetitive tasks, allowing teams to focus on creative work. This adoption is driven by the potential for increased efficiency and innovation.

Developers are leveraging AI agents for diverse applications, including accelerating playtesting and balancing of game mechanics, assisting in localization and translation of content, and improving code generation. Furthermore, AI is being utilized for asset optimization that adapts to in-game needs and for dynamic balancing and tuning of gameplay, enhancing the overall development pipeline.

Despite the perceived benefits, the survey underscores notable hesitations, particularly regarding intellectual property and data rights. The 63% of developers concerned about data ownership cited specific worries such as player data privacy, unclear licensing agreements for AI-generated content, and the broader ownership of AI-created assets. Other challenges include the difficulty in measuring the success of AI implementations and the costs associated with integrating the technology.

Looking ahead, 94% of developers anticipate that AI will contribute to reducing overall development costs in the long term, signaling a positive outlook despite current hurdles. While AI is viewed as a powerful tool for productivity and creativity, the industry continues to grapple with its implications for team compositions and the potential emergence of new AI-focused roles. This dual perspective reflects the transformative yet complex nature of AI's role in shaping the future of interactive entertainment.
