Muhammadu Buhari, a prominent figure in Nigerian history who served as the nation's President from 2015 to 2023, has had a public life marked by significant political and military endeavors. Alongside his distinguished career, his personal life, particularly his romantic journey, has also been part of the public narrative. His relationships, primarily his two marriages, have shaped his family life and provided a glimpse into the man behind the leadership.

Buhari's first significant romantic chapter began with Safinatu Yusuf. They were married in 1971, embarking on a union that would last for nearly two decades. During their marriage, the couple had five children: four daughters named Zulaihat, Fatima, Hadiza, and Safinatu, and one son named Musa. Their family grew as Buhari navigated various roles in the Nigerian military and government. The marriage, however, concluded in 1988 with a divorce. Sadly, Safinatu passed away on January 14, 2006, due to complications from diabetes. Their first daughter, Zulaihat, also passed away in November 2012 from sickle cell anemia.

A new chapter in Muhammadu Buhari's romantic life commenced shortly after his divorce. In December 1989, he married Aisha Halilu, who would later become the First Lady of Nigeria during his presidency. At the time of their marriage, Aisha was 18 years old, while Buhari was a retired Major General. This union marked the beginning of a long-standing partnership that has endured for over three decades. Together, Muhammadu and Aisha Buhari have five children: a son named Yusuf, and four daughters named Aisha, Halima, Zahra, and Amina. Their marriage has been a subject of public interest, particularly during his time as President.

Aisha Buhari has often been a vocal and supportive partner, though not without her own public statements that sometimes stirred discussion. Their 33rd wedding anniversary was celebrated on December 2, 2022. An aide to the president, Lauretta Onochie, publicly congratulated the couple, stating, "Today, December 2, is the 33rd wedding anniversary of our beloved number one couple—President Muhammadu Buhari, and the beautiful First Lady, Aisha. Our prayers and thoughts are with them today and always. Happy anniversary to the most beautiful couple I know. God bless Nigeria."

Like many public figures, their relationship has faced scrutiny and rumors. In October 2019, widespread speculation circulated about President Buhari potentially taking a third wife, specifically Sadiya Farouq, a female cabinet member. The rumors gained significant traction on social media. However, these claims were ultimately debunked. Aisha Buhari, who was out of the country at the time, addressed the rumors upon her return. While she cryptically referred to a "promise of marriage" in an interview with BBC Hausa, suggesting there might have been discussions, the marriage itself did not occur. Ms. Farouq's public activities at the time, including her presence in Geneva for a UN meeting, further contradicted the wedding claims. The First Lady's comments and the lack of official confirmation from either the President or Ms. Farouq indicated that the rumored wedding was indeed false. This incident highlighted the intense public interest in the personal lives of prominent political figures.

Throughout his life, Muhammadu Buhari's romantic relationships have been characterized by stability within his two marriages, even amidst the demands of a high-profile political career. His family, comprising children from both unions, has remained a consistent element of his personal narrative. The public nature of his roles meant that his marriages, like other aspects of his life, were often under the spotlight, reflecting the intersection of personal life and public service in the life of a national leader.
