Recent research, highlighted by computer scientist Rohan Paul, reveals that a trained Hierarchical Reinforcement Module (HRM) exhibits a "dimensionality hierarchy" akin to that observed in the mammalian brain. This finding suggests that artificial intelligence can learn to allocate computational resources in a manner mirroring biological systems, with higher-level functions utilizing a richer, more complex internal representation.

The study centers on the "participation ratio," a metric quantifying the independent directions spanned by neural activations, where higher values indicate a more sophisticated, higher-dimensional internal code. In the mouse cortex, higher-order associative areas consistently demonstrate a larger participation ratio than primary sensory areas, a trend confirmed by a significant correlation coefficient of 0.79 between cortical level and participation ratio. This biological observation underscores a fundamental dimensionality hierarchy within the brain.

The trained HRM, when tasked with solving Sudoku puzzles, remarkably mirrored this biological pattern. As the complexity and number of distinct Sudoku trajectories increased, the high-level module of the HRM saw its participation ratio surge to 89.95. Conversely, the low-level module maintained a significantly lower and more compact participation ratio of approximately 30.22.
