Amazon is reportedly considering an additional multi-billion dollar investment in artificial intelligence firm Anthropic, signaling a deepening commitment to their strategic partnership in the competitive AI landscape. This potential move comes as Amazon aims to solidify its position as a dominant shareholder without exceeding a one-third ownership threshold, according to recent reports. As stated by Rihard Jarc on social media, "Anthropic has become an integral and strategic piece to $AMZN, AWS likes to make a lot of key cloud features/offerings in-house but the frontier AI model seem to be a space where they will go with Anthropic for the long run."

This new investment would build upon Amazon's existing $8 billion commitment to Anthropic. The prior investment established Amazon Web Services (AWS) as Anthropic's primary cloud provider and training partner, with Anthropic utilizing AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips for developing its advanced AI models. A portion of Amazon's initial investment, structured as convertible notes, recently converted to equity in Q1 2025, contributing a pre-tax gain of $3.3 billion to Amazon's profits.

Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI research executives, recently achieved a post-money valuation of $61.5 billion after its latest funding round in March 2025. Its flagship AI chatbot, Claude, has seen significant adoption and is now integrated into Amazon products, including Alexa+. The collaboration allows AWS customers to access and fine-tune Claude models via Amazon Bedrock, enhancing their generative AI applications.

The potential for increased ownership underscores Amazon's strategy to secure a leading role in the generative AI arms race, competing directly with rivals like Microsoft, which has a deep relationship with OpenAI, and Google, which holds over $3 billion in Anthropic investments and a 10% stake. Rihard Jarc emphasized the urgency for Amazon, noting, "$AMZN increasing their ownership to a 1/3 stake of Anthropic is probably in the cards very soon. $AMZN can’t afford to lose them as partners." This strategic alignment aims to ensure Amazon's access to cutting-edge AI technology while Anthropic maintains its operational independence.
