An anonymous Democratic strategist has controversially stated that the party should "pray long and hard" for a "f*cking depression" in the United States, suggesting it as a potential route out of the party's current political difficulties. The remark, reported by The Hill, highlights a grim outlook among some within the Democratic Party following significant setbacks in the 2024 election cycle.
The strategist described the current situation as a "nightmare scenario" for Democrats, expressing uncertainty about how the party can otherwise navigate its challenges. > "This is a nightmare scenario for the Dems right now. We better pray long and hard that the country is going to be in a f*cking depression, because I don’t know how else we find ourselves out of this mess," the anonymous strategist told The Hill.
Other Democratic strategists have also voiced concerns about the party's standing. Brad Bannon noted that Democrats are "still stuck in the same mud that they were in six months ago" and remain "as unpopular as we were when [President Donald] Trump was inaugurated in January." Rodell Mollineau, a senior advisor for Unite the Country, characterized the party as being "in the wilderness," struggling to message effectively when voters perceive a lack of care for their issues.
Recent surveys underscore this dissatisfaction, with a Marist/NPR/PBS News poll revealing that only 27% of Americans approve of congressional Democrats' performance. Furthermore, a June poll indicated that 62% of self-identified Democrats believe the party's leadership should be replaced, and there's a perceived disconnect between the base's priorities and the leadership's focus.
Amidst these challenges, some Democrats are urging the party to actively oppose key aspects of the Trump administration's agenda. Bannon suggested that the "secret sauce for the opposition" lies in attacking policies such as Medicaid cuts, immigration deportations, and high tariffs, aiming to highlight the administration's failure to address rising prices.
