Armed Bystander Aids in Apprehension of Suspect After 11 Stabbed at Michigan Walmart

TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan – Eleven individuals were stabbed at a Walmart in Traverse City on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in what authorities describe as a random act of violence. The incident saw a 42-year-old man allegedly use a folding knife to attack shoppers, but his spree was cut short by the swift intervention of bystanders, including one armed citizen, who helped detain him until law enforcement arrived.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea confirmed that the suspect, identified as Bradford Gille, entered the store around 4:45 p.m. and began stabbing people indiscriminately. The victims, ranging in age from 29 to 84, included both men and women, with one Walmart employee among them.

The quick actions of citizens were crucial in preventing further harm. "After a man reportedly stabbed 11 at a Walmart in Michigan, a bystander using his 2nd Amendment right stopped him from injuring more until officers took over," a social media post highlighted, acknowledging the role of the armed individual and others in subduing the attacker. Sheriff Shea praised the bystanders for their involvement, noting that the suspect was apprehended within minutes of the attack.

Gille has since been formally charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. While six of the victims were initially in critical condition and five in serious condition, all 11 are expected to survive their injuries, according to Munson Healthcare, the region's largest hospital.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her concern, stating, "Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence." Walmart also issued a statement, affirming its cooperation with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation. The incident has sent shockwaves through Traverse City, a community typically known for its peaceful atmosphere.
