Eastern New Mexico University Roswell has terminated campus security officer Oswaldo Vazquez Nava following a controversial social media post mocking conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The dismissal, which occurred around September 17, 2025, gained wider attention after conservative pundit Ann Coulter commented on the situation, sarcastically labeling Nava a "Natural Republican" in a recent tweet.
Nava's termination stemmed from a post where he stated, "I woke up today and guess who didn't?? Charlie Kirk lol," according to a tweet from conservative activist Scott Presler. Presler had publicly questioned how an individual celebrating Kirk's potential demise could remain in a security role responsible for protecting lives, prompting action from the university. Dr. Shawn Powell, the university president, was thanked by Presler for the swift response.
Ann Coulter, known for her provocative commentary, shared Presler's post and added her own terse remark: > "Oswaldo Vazquez Nava. 'Natural Republicans.'" This statement appears to be an ironic jab, given Nava's alleged mockery of a prominent conservative figure. Coulter has frequently used the term "Natural Republicans" in her past writings, often in a context that critiques demographic shifts and their impact on political alignment, or to sarcastically highlight perceived inconsistencies.
Prior to this incident, Nava had a public profile in Roswell, New Mexico, having run for a City Council seat in Ward 5. During his campaign, he was registered as a Republican but indicated he was considering registering as a Democrat for the local race, stating a preference to "put aside the party and look at the policy." He also managed a local Facebook page called "Roswell Today." The university has confirmed Nava is no longer employed at the institution, citing the negative social media post as the reason for his departure.
