Coinbase has launched its new "Base app," a significant evolution of its existing Coinbase Wallet, designed to integrate blockchain functionalities into everyday digital life. This "super app" aims to simplify Web3 interactions for a broader audience, moving beyond crypto-native users to onboard billions into the cryptoeconomy, as detailed by the company and observed by prominent Web3 UX designer 0xDesigner. The initiative leverages Coinbase's Layer 2 blockchain, Base, to provide a seamless and low-cost onchain experience.
0xDesigner, a pseudonymous expert in user experience for crypto, lauded the Base app's foundational approach, stating, "it serves a larger purpose for the industry. it’s one step closer to showing the broader population what’s possible when you combine social with ownership, commerce, [and] peer to peer transactions." This vision extends beyond mere financial transactions, encompassing digital assets like collected media, unique handles, access rights, and in-game assets.
The app is designed to enable direct onchain commerce, allowing users to "buy and sell anything without linking out," facilitating instant purchases at the moment of discovery. Furthermore, it supports peer-to-peer transactions, enabling users to "send money in the feed or in a dm, set up a wager in the group chat, and resell anything directly... with native payments." This integrated functionality aims to make blockchain technology an invisible, yet powerful, layer of daily digital activities.
Coinbase views the Base app as a critical bridge to mainstream Web3 adoption, leveraging its vast user base and promoting the use of stablecoins like USDC for everyday transactions. The underlying Base blockchain, an Ethereum Layer 2 solution built on Optimism's OP Stack, ensures transactions are faster and significantly cheaper than on the main Ethereum network, addressing a key barrier to widespread adoption. This technical foundation supports the app's ambitious goal of making onchain interactions feel as intuitive as traditional online experiences.
While acknowledging the app's strong foundation, 0xDesigner noted areas for improvement, observing that "each tab feels like a separate app. there’s no single anchor to latch on to. the design will inevitably improve." This reflects broader challenges in Web3 user experience, where complexity and fragmentation often hinder mass adoption. Despite these nascent stages, the Base app represents a strategic move by Coinbase to integrate blockchain seamlessly into social and commercial activities, laying groundwork for a future where digital ownership and decentralized interactions are commonplace.
