New York City's 2025 mayoral race is intensifying, with Democratic strategist Lis Smith publicly scrutinizing the campaign performance of Democratic frontrunner Zohran Mamdani. Smith's remarks, shared on social media, highlight concerns about the campaign's preparedness and ability to counter Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. The election, also featuring independent Andrew Cuomo, is set for November 4.

In a direct critique, Smith questioned the campaign's strategic execution, stating, > "Like what are we doing here? What punches has he landed? What attacks has he deflected? How much time has he been on defense v offense? How is he addressing NY'ers concerns?" She further suggested a lack of readiness, adding, > "Looks like he didn't do a lick of prep between the primary & now. Even Sliwa is eating his lunch."

The criticism comes as Mamdani, an assemblyman from Queens, navigates the general election after securing the Democratic primary. He faces Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee and founder of the Guardian Angels, who has maintained a consistent presence in New York City politics, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams withdrew from the race in late September.

A recent mayoral debate on October 16, just two days before Smith's tweet, saw Mamdani engage aggressively with Cuomo on issues like affordability, while Sliwa frequently interjected and challenged both candidates. Sliwa notably dismissed Mamdani's policy proposals as "fantasies," indicating a combative stance from the Republican. The debate also touched on contentious topics such as public safety, housing, and the candidates' stances on Israel.

The race dynamics have shifted following Adams' exit, with Cuomo reportedly gaining ground in polling. However, Sliwa's continued participation has been a point of discussion, with some, like billionaire investor Bill Ackman, urging him to drop out to consolidate anti-Mamdani votes behind Cuomo. Sliwa, who garnered over 27% of the vote in the 2021 mayoral election against Eric Adams, remains a determined contender.

As the election approaches, the effectiveness of each campaign's strategy in addressing core New Yorker concerns and defining their narratives against opponents will be crucial. The outcome will determine who leads New York City for the next term.
