Elon Musk's Super PAC, America PAC, has publicly affirmed its strong relationship with former President Donald Trump following a significant financial commitment to his recent presidential campaign. The PAC spent approximately $200 million to support Trump's bid for a second term, marking a new standard for billionaire influence in elections, according to sources familiar with the group's spending. This substantial backing underscores a clear alignment between the tech billionaire and the former president.
America PAC, founded by Elon Musk, received the vast majority of its funding from the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who accounted for 91% of declared contributions as of December 2024. The PAC primarily focused its efforts on mobilizing low-propensity and first-time voters, particularly in key battleground states. Its work was significantly aided by a March Federal Election Commission (FEC) ruling that permitted Super PACs to coordinate canvassing efforts directly with campaigns.
Following the election, President-elect Trump publicly acknowledged Musk's pivotal role, stating at his election night party in Florida, "We have a new star... A star is born – Elon!" This praise highlighted the strategic advantage gained by the Trump campaign, which leveraged America PAC's near-unlimited capital for voter outreach. Musk's net worth reportedly increased by $70 billion after Trump's victory on November 5.
Despite its impact, America PAC's operations faced scrutiny and legal challenges, including allegations of fraudulent canvassing and poor working conditions for its field staff. The PAC also initiated a controversial $1 million voter giveaway scheme, which drew warnings from the Justice Department and led to lawsuits, with Musk's lawyers later clarifying that winners were selected based on alignment with the PAC's values rather than random chance. Musk has indicated his intention for America PAC to remain active in politics, preparing for future midterm and local elections.
