Ethereum Foundation DevOps Engineer Parithosh Jayanthi recently underscored the critical role of devnet data in determining future "blob values" following the activation of PeerDAS within the upcoming Fusaka upgrade. Jayanthi, a key figure in Ethereum's testing efforts, highlighted the collaborative contributions of blockchain infrastructure provider Test in Prod and Coinbase's Layer 2 network, Base, in making this crucial data collection possible. "The data from this devnet would be a really important data point for deciding what blob values we choose for the first bumps after PeerDAS goes live in Fusaka," Jayanthi stated in a tweet.
The Fusaka upgrade, codenamed Fulu + Osaka, is slated for late 2025 and is designed to significantly enhance Ethereum's scalability and data availability. A central component of this upgrade is PeerDAS (Peer-to-Peer Data Availability Sampling), formalized under EIP-7594. This innovation allows network validators to verify transactions by sampling small portions of data blobs rather than downloading entire datasets, thereby reducing bandwidth and storage requirements.
Blob values, which represent chunks of data introduced with the Dencun upgrade, are fundamental to the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of Layer 2 scaling solutions built on Ethereum. PeerDAS is expected to revolutionize how these blobs are handled, with a "stretch goal" of increasing throughput by up to eight times. This could see the target blob count rise from 6 to 48 per block, enabling substantially lower transaction fees and higher throughput for Layer 2s.
The ongoing devnet testing, actively supported by entities like Test in Prod, provides essential real-world data for fine-tuning these critical network parameters. Test in Prod specializes in building and operating secure blockchain infrastructure and offers comprehensive testnet support, directly contributing to the robustness of Ethereum's development environment. Coinbase's Base, as a prominent Layer 2, stands to directly benefit from these scalability improvements, fostering a more efficient and accessible decentralized ecosystem.
