Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has reiterated Finland's steadfast support for the people of Ukraine in their struggle against Russia's war and long-standing corruption. Valtonen emphasized that this support is specifically directed towards ordinary Ukrainians fighting for a free society and their rights, a message she conveyed during a recent discussion on Iltalehti's Ukkola program. The Minister's comments underscore Finland's commitment despite ongoing challenges within Ukraine.

"Tavalliset ihmiset Ukrainassa ovat päättäneet taistella vapaan yhteiskunnan ja oikeuksiensa puolesta, niin Venäjän hyökkäyssotaa kuin vuosikymmenten neuvostovallan jäljiltä jäänyttä korruptiota vastaan. Me tuemme heitä, nimenomaan näitä tavallisia ukrainalaisia ihmisiä, heidän taistelussaan," Valtonen stated in a social media post following her appearance. She highlighted the dual nature of Ukraine's fight against both external aggression and internal systemic issues.

Valtonen has consistently maintained that recent corruption scandals in Ukraine will not diminish Finland's aid. She attributes Ukraine's historical struggle with corruption to Russia's continuous pressure, which has prevented the nation from fully developing a corruption-free society since its independence. Finland, alongside the international community, actively monitors Ukraine's anti-corruption efforts, even protesting legislative changes that could undermine the independence of anti-corruption bodies.

The Finnish Foreign Minister's stance aligns with broader European efforts to support Ukraine while also ensuring accountability for aid. She recently held discussions with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, covering Ukraine's peace initiatives, the battlefield situation, and ongoing anti-corruption reforms. Valtonen also stressed the importance of European unity and strengthening sanctions against Russia, asserting that direct negotiations with Moscow are premature.
