Florida Governor DeSantis Vows "Swift and Severe" Accountability for Attacks on ICE Agents Amidst $28 Million Federal Funding Boost

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a stern warning against any attacks on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the state, emphasizing that such actions would be met with "swift and severe" accountability. The declaration came as Florida secured over $28 million in federal funding to bolster its immigration enforcement efforts through a "historic agreement" with ICE. DeSantis explicitly stated, > "Florida is not Portland. If you think you can go and launch attacks against ICE agents in this state, you've got another thing coming."

The Governor's remarks follow an alarming increase in rhetoric and actions targeting federal law enforcement, including a recent shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas where two detainees were killed. Officials have indicated that shell casings found at the scene bore anti-ICE messages, suggesting a targeted attack. DeSantis underscored that ICE agents are tasked with enforcing federal laws, asserting that dissatisfaction with these laws should be addressed through the democratic process rather than violence.

The significant federal allocation includes more than $28 million for the state and an additional $10 million for local law enforcement, part of a $1.7 billion nationwide distribution under the 287(g) program. This funding supports Florida's robust participation in the program, which empowers state and local officers to perform immigration enforcement duties. Florida has been recognized by ICE as setting the national standard for 287(g) partnerships, with hundreds of agreements in place.

Under Governor DeSantis's leadership, Florida has prioritized immigration enforcement, establishing initiatives like the full-time immigration enforcement unit within the Highway Patrol and opening detention centers such as "Alligator Alcatraz" and "Deportation Depot." The state has conducted large-scale operations, including "Operation Tidal Wave," which resulted in over 1,100 arrests. These efforts underscore Florida's commitment to upholding federal immigration laws and supporting its law enforcement partners.

DeSantis reiterated his administration's "zero tolerance" policy for any actions that undermine law enforcement. He criticized politicians who he believes "gin up hatred and opposition" towards federal officers, stating, "what you don't do is take matters into your own hands and launch attacks against people who are simply doing their job."
