Florida State Erases Pulse Nightclub Memorial Crosswalk Honoring 49 Victims

Orlando, Florida – The Florida state government recently painted over a rainbow-colored crosswalk memorializing the 49 victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub mass shooting, sparking widespread condemnation from local officials and the LGBTQ+ community. The abrupt removal of the memorial, which had been in place since 2017, occurred overnight and has ignited a debate over public space, remembrance, and state authority.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) justified its action by stating a duty to "ensure the safety and consistency of public roadways" and that "roadways are not utilized for social, political, or ideological interests." Governor Ron DeSantis echoed this sentiment on social media, stating, "We will not allow our state roads to be commandeered for political purposes." This move follows an updated Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices prohibiting non-uniform pavement markings.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer called the removal a "cruel political act," emphasizing that the crosswalk "enhanced safety and visibility for the large number of pedestrians visiting the memorial" and served as a "visual reminder of Orlando's commitment to honor the 49 lives taken." State Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith described it as a "hostile act against the city of Orlando," carried out "in the middle of the night because they were scared of the resistance."

In response to the state's action, hundreds of protesters gathered at the site, using chalk and later paint to restore the rainbow colors.
