Freed hostage Bar Kupershtein has publicly expressed immense gratitude for the widespread support he received during his 738 days of captivity in Gaza. Speaking after his release, Kupershtein stated, > "I want to say thank you so much to everyone for your prayers, all your support, and everything you've done for me and for all the other hostages. I don't have words to describe all the love and what you're doing for me and for all the hostages." His emotional remarks, initially shared by Aviva Klompas, underscore the deep impact of public solidarity.
Kupershtein, 23, was abducted from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, where he was assisting the wounded as an off-duty Nahal combat soldier and volunteer paramedic. His return marked a poignant moment in the ongoing efforts to secure the release of all captives. During his nearly two-year ordeal, he endured starvation, psychological torment, and physical abuse.
A particularly harrowing account from his captivity revealed that Hamas militants beat him and fellow hostages in retaliation for comments made by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir regarding stricter conditions for Palestinian prisoners. Kupershtein recounted, "They came to us and beat us. They said they were doing it because of Ben-Gvir. 'What he does to our prisoners, you will get too – an eye for an eye.'" He expressed frustration that such statements provided Hamas with justification for their brutality.
Despite the dire circumstances, Kupershtein's mother, Julie Kupershtein, shared that her son maintained his faith and even observed Shabbat in captivity. Upon his return, his first request was for a bowl of Kariot cereal with milk, a simple comfort he and other hostages had dreamed of. His father, Tal, disabled from a previous accident, regained his ability to speak, fulfilling a dream to welcome his son home.
Kupershtein's release and his subsequent public appearances, including at Hostages Square, serve as a powerful reminder of the human cost of the conflict and the continued plight of those still held captive. His story highlights the resilience of the hostages and the unwavering commitment of their families and supporters to bring them all home.
