Google Removes Nearly 11,000 State-Linked Propaganda Channels, Over 7,700 From China, in Q2 2025

Google's YouTube platform has taken down nearly 11,000 channels and associated accounts during the second quarter of 2025, citing their involvement in coordinated influence operations. This significant action targets state-linked propaganda campaigns, with over 7,700 of the removed channels specifically tied to China. The widespread removal, as noted by various reports, is part of Google's ongoing efforts to combat disinformation across its services.

The channels linked to China primarily disseminated content in both Chinese and English. This material often promoted the People's Republic of China, expressed support for President Xi Jinping, and commented on U.S. foreign affairs. The comprehensive sweep underscores the pervasive nature of state-sponsored narratives on global platforms.

In addition to the China-linked accounts, more than 2,000 channels connected to Russian influence operations were also removed. These Russian channels published content in multiple languages, supporting Russia and criticizing Ukraine, NATO, and Western countries. Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) also identified and removed campaigns originating from Azerbaijan, Iran, Israel, Ghana, Romania, and Turkey.

This latest crackdown by Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) is a continuation of its work to counter global disinformation. The company stated that these findings are consistent with their regular and ongoing efforts, following the removal of over 23,000 accounts in the first quarter of 2025 for similar reasons. The removed accounts spanned various Google services, including YouTube, Ads, AdSense, Blogger, and Google News.

The widespread removal highlights the persistent challenge social media platforms face in combating sophisticated state-backed influence campaigns. These operations aim to manipulate public opinion and spread narratives aligned with specific geopolitical agendas. YouTube's proactive measures reflect an intensified commitment to maintaining platform integrity against such coordinated efforts.
