Grammarly Consolidates AI Productivity Vision with Coda and Superhuman Acquisitions

San Francisco – Grammarly, the leading AI writing assistant, is strategically expanding its capabilities to form a comprehensive "AI-native productivity suite" through recent key acquisitions. This strategic shift, spearheaded by new CEO Shishir Mehrotra, involves the integration of collaborative workspace Coda and AI-native email platform Superhuman, aiming to redefine how humans and artificial intelligence collaborate in professional workflows.

The ambitious vision was recently discussed by Shishir Mehrotra, co-founder of Coda and current CEO of Grammarly, on the Grit Podcast. Mehrotra, known for his early role in YouTube’s development, highlighted Coda's established presence, noting that "What started as a doc rethink is now core to 80% of Fortune 100 companies," indicating its widespread adoption in streamlining complex operations for organizations like TED and Figma.

Grammarly acquired Coda in December 2024, a move that saw Mehrotra assume the CEO position of the combined entity. This acquisition laid the groundwork for Grammarly's evolution beyond a writing assistant into a broader AI productivity platform. Mehrotra stated that the Coda acquisition was driven by the theory of giving users a "natural writing home for users to work with all their agents."

Further solidifying this strategy, Grammarly announced its intent to acquire Superhuman in July 2025. This addition is critical to the "AI-native productivity suite," as email remains a primary communication channel in the professional world. Mehrotra emphasized that "email is sort of the obvious place to go" for the next part of the suite, recognizing that professionals spend significant time in their inboxes.

The combined entities aim to create a seamless environment where AI agents can operate across various applications, enhancing productivity and streamlining tasks. This strategic consolidation positions Grammarly to lead the next generation of productivity tools, moving towards a future where AI is deeply embedded in every aspect of work.
