NORMAL, Ill. – An Illinois State University graduate student and teaching assistant, Derek Lopez, 27, was arrested on October 17, 2025, after allegedly flipping a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) informational table and tearing down promotional flyers on campus. Lopez faces charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property following the incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated. The confrontation occurred as TPUSA students were promoting an upcoming event featuring political comedian Alex Stein. Video footage shows Lopez approaching the table and stating, "Well, you know, Jesus did it, so you know I gotta do it, right?" before overturning the display. He then reportedly sneered at the students and left the area. Illinois State University Police confirmed Lopez's arrest and stated that the case is pending, with the possibility of additional charges and university disciplinary action. University Police Chief Aaron Woodruff emphasized the institution's commitment to free speech, saying, "We are committed to protecting the First Amendment rights as well as safety of everyone in our campus community." He encouraged the community to learn about free speech rights and responsibilities. Lopez, who is also a graduate student, allegedly disrupted a second informational table hosted by another student group. Turning Point USA, a national conservative student organization, frequently sets up tables on college campuses, which have occasionally led to protests and confrontations over political expression. The incident has sparked discussions regarding free speech and the conduct of faculty and staff on university grounds.
