Director Joachim Trier's latest film, "Sentimental Value," is making significant waves, as highlighted by a new profile from The New Yorker. The film, starring Renate Reinsve and Stellan Skarsgård, has received widespread critical acclaim, notably winning the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. It currently boasts an impressive 96% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its mature exploration of artistic expression and personal connection.

"Sentimental Value" delves into the complex dynamics of a fractured family, centering on two estranged sisters, Nora and Agnes, who confront their once-renowned but now almost forgotten filmmaker father, Gustav. The narrative explores how Gustav attempts a comeback by making a deeply personal film about their family history, offering Nora a lead role which she initially declines. This decision leads to an American star, Rachel Kemp, being cast, further complicating the family's already strained relationships and exploring themes of legacy, trauma, and reconciliation through art.

The film features a compelling ensemble cast, with Renate Reinsve delivering a standout performance as Nora, and Stellan Skarsgård portraying the charismatic Gustav. Elle Fanning joins the cast as Rachel Kemp, the American actress. Trier co-wrote the screenplay with his long-time collaborator Eskil Vogt, known for their previous work on films like "The Worst Person in the World."

Critics have lauded "Sentimental Value" for its emotional authenticity and nuanced performances. Rotten Tomatoes' consensus states, "Deftly exploring the uneasy tension between artistic expression and personal connection, Sentimental Value is a bracingly mature work from writer-director Joachim Trier that's marvelously acted across the board." The film also holds a Metascore of 89 out of 100, indicating "universal acclaim," and was selected as Norway's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.

Following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2025, where it received a 19-minute standing ovation, the film was theatrically released in Norway on September 12. Distributor Neon plans a robust awards campaign for its North American release on November 7, 2025, positioning the drama for potential Oscar contention. Mubi has also acquired distribution rights for several international territories, including the UK, where it is set for a Christmas release.
