Saratoga Springs, NY – The Jockeys team triumphed over the Horsemen with a final score of 85-72 in the annual Jockeys vs. Horsemen Charity Basketball Game. The event, held at the Saratoga Springs Recreation Center, marked the 16th iteration of the popular fundraiser, bringing together the racing community for a competitive and philanthropic evening. The New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced the outcome, stating, > "The Jockeys take the win in this year’s Jockeys vs. Horsemen Charity Basketball Game with a final score of 85-72! A great night of competition for a great cause, benefitting the @NYRTCA and the @PDJFund."
The charity basketball game is a cornerstone event during the Saratoga racing season, fostering camaraderie while raising crucial funds for two significant organizations within the thoroughbred industry. Hall of Fame jockey Ángel Cordero Jr. once again coached the victorious Jockeys team, a role he has held for many years. The Horsemen team was coached this year by trainer Kenny McPeek and retired New York-based trainer Rick Schosberg.
Proceeds from the game benefit the New York Race Track Chaplaincy (NYRTCA) and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). The NYRTCA provides extensive support to stable workers and their families across New York's racetracks, offering children's enrichment, social services, recreational activities, educational programs, and non-denominational religious services. Their mission focuses on ministering to the spiritual and practical needs of this vital community.
The Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) offers financial assistance to approximately 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries, including paralysis and brain injuries. Since its inception in 2006, the PDJF has disbursed nearly $14 million to support these individuals, relying entirely on charitable donations to continue its vital work. The annual basketball game plays a significant role in raising awareness and funds for both beneficiaries.
The event consistently draws a large crowd, highlighting the racing community's commitment to supporting its members. Beyond the competitive spirit, the game serves as a powerful demonstration of solidarity, ensuring that those who contribute to the sport, both on and off the track, receive essential care and resources when needed. The successful 2025 game continues a tradition of giving back to the foundations of the sport.
