Kamigotchi, the fully on-chain pet idle-RPG developed by Asphodel Studio, has announced the open-sourcing of its client and application code, marking a significant step towards a truly decentralized gaming ecosystem. This move follows years of development and comes as the project prepares for its mainnet launch on Initia, leveraging the MUD engine, OP Stack, and Celestia for its infrastructure. The decision aims to empower players with full control and foster community-driven development within its "immortal world."
"We've been working on Kami for years, so this is a big day," stated the developer known as lethe in a recent social media post. While the game's hundreds of smart contracts have long been verified, the release of the client code is the "big change," making the entire stack accessible to users. This transparency is intended to deepen player understanding and engagement.
Kamigotchi distinguishes itself by embracing automation, botting, and unconventional playstyles, which have flourished even before this open-source release. "Opening up the whole stack in this way lets users understand and do more so they can take that further," lethe explained. Previously, players resorted to reverse engineering for simple integrations, yet still managed to build a suite of automation services and visualization tools.
With the client code now public, users gain unprecedented control over their interaction with the game. As all in-game actions are blockchain transactions, the developers do not need to enforce a standard client, promoting user freedom. "I'm very excited to see what people can do with full access to the code," lethe remarked, expressing anticipation for community-built clients and direct integration of automation tools.
Kamigotchi is positioned as one of the pioneering games in its genre, venturing into uncharted territory for decentralized gaming. "There's no precedent for what people can do here," the developer noted. The project plans to explore the concept of building a truly decentralized game in public, inviting community contributions to its ongoing evolution. The game recently secured $1.3 million in seed funding from angel investors, further solidifying its position in the burgeoning on-chain gaming sector.
