San Francisco, CA – The long-awaited murder trial of Keonte Gathron, accused in the brutal 2019 attack that led to the death of 88-year-old Yik Oi Huang, commenced on September 22 in the San Francisco Hall of Justice. Gathron, now 25, has notably chosen to represent himself in the proceedings, which follow nearly seven years of legal delays. The case has drawn significant attention due to its tragic nature and the extended wait for justice.

Yik Oi Huang was attacked on January 8, 2019, during her morning walk in Visitacion Valley Playground, suffering a broken skull, arms, and neck. She succumbed to her injuries in January 2020 at the age of 89. Prosecutors allege that Gathron was engaged in a violent crime spree when he assaulted Huang, with Assistant District Attorney Nathan Quigley stating, "This brutal assault didn’t happen in a vacuum," during opening statements.

Gathron was arrested within days of the attack and has been in custody since. He faces 25 criminal counts, including murder, and has pleaded not guilty. The San Francisco park where the attack occurred has since been renamed Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park in her honor, a testament to the community's enduring remembrance and activism led by Huang's granddaughter, Sasanna Yee.

The decision by Gathron to represent himself adds a complex layer to the high-profile case. While defendants have the right to self-representation, it often presents significant challenges in navigating legal procedures and presenting a defense. Court records indicate Gathron has filed several legal motions and has access to documents to prepare his case.

The trial's lengthy delay has been a point of frustration for both the prosecution and Huang's family. Former District Attorney Brooke Jenkins attributed much of the delay to defense attorneys requiring extensive time to prepare for such a complex case, citing the need to review thousands of pages of discovery and consult with forensic experts. The commencement of jury selection and the trial itself mark a critical step towards resolution for the community and Huang's family.
