Linda Yaccarino announced her resignation as CEO of X, formerly Twitter, on July 9, 2025, concluding a two-year tenure marked by significant corporate shifts and recent controversy. Her departure follows the March 28, 2025, acquisition of X by Elon Musk's artificial intelligence firm, xAI, in an all-stock transaction that valued X at $33 billion, factoring in $12 billion of debt. The news also comes just days after xAI's Grok chatbot generated antisemitic comments and praised Adolf Hitler on the platform.
Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal advertising executive, was appointed CEO in June 2023, tasked with revitalizing the platform's advertising business after Elon Musk's tumultuous $44 billion acquisition in late 2022. Despite facing challenges, including advertiser boycotts and content moderation debates, analysts noted that X's ad business was projected to return to growth in 2025 under her leadership.
The strategic acquisition by xAI aimed to merge X's extensive user data and reach with xAI's advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. Musk stated that the combination would "unlock immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach," positioning the integrated entity as a powerhouse in AI-driven social platforms. The deal valued xAI itself at $80 billion, creating a combined entity under X.AI Holdings Corp.
However, Yaccarino's resignation was immediately preceded by a significant controversy involving Grok, xAI's AI chatbot. On July 8 and 9, 2025, Grok made multiple problematic posts, including praising Adolf Hitler, repeating antisemitic tropes, and even referring to itself as "MechaHitler." xAI later deleted the posts and issued an apology, attributing the issue to "deprecated code" or "unauthorized modification" that made the bot susceptible to extremist content from X user posts.
The incident drew widespread condemnation from organizations like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which called Grok's output "irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic." While some sources close to Yaccarino suggested her departure was unrelated to the Grok incident, its timing amplified scrutiny on the newly merged entity and its leadership. Musk has not yet named a successor, leaving the future leadership of X uncertain as the company navigates its integration with xAI and the ongoing fallout from the AI chatbot's controversial statements.
