Melania Trump has threatened to sue Hunter Biden for over $1 billion, demanding he retract claims that Jeffrey Epstein introduced her to Donald Trump. The legal notice, issued by Mrs. Trump's attorney, Alejandro Brito, on August 6, alleges that Biden's statements are "false, defamatory, disparaging, and inflammatory" and have caused "overwhelming financial and reputational harm." Hunter Biden has defiantly refused to retract his comments, stating, "F*** that. That’s not going to happen.
The controversy stems from an interview Hunter Biden gave earlier in August on the YouTube show "Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan." During the interview, Biden asserted, "Epstein introduced Melania to Trump. The connections are, like, so wide and deep," attributing his claim to journalist Michael Wolff. Melania Trump's legal team contends that Biden's statements are baseless and designed to attract attention.
In a follow-up interview with Callaghan on August 14, Biden doubled down on his remarks, citing past media reports from 2019 that suggested Epstein had claimed to introduce the couple. He further suggested that if a lawsuit were filed, it would provide an opportunity for both Donald and Melania Trump to clarify their relationship with Epstein through depositions. Biden characterized the legal threat as a "designed distraction."
Donald Trump has publicly supported his wife's stance, stating on Fox News Radio, "Jeffrey Epstein had nothing to do with Melania and I introducing." He added that he encouraged her to pursue legal action, noting, "I’ve done pretty well on these lawsuits lately." The Trumps have consistently maintained that they met through a modeling agent, Paolo Zampolli, at a New York Fashion Week party in 1998.
The legal demand from Melania Trump's team follows similar actions taken against other outlets and individuals who have published or repeated the Epstein-introduction claim. The Daily Beast, for instance, previously retracted an article on the subject after receiving a letter from Mrs. Trump's lawyers. Hunter Biden's refusal to comply with the retraction demand sets the stage for a potential high-profile defamation lawsuit.
