Meta Quest Developer Ecosystem Surpasses $2 Billion in Content Spending, Bolstering Resource Investment

The Meta Quest development team, led by Jake Steinerman, has announced an ongoing initiative to create new tutorials, guides, and documentation for virtual reality (VR) developers. This effort aims to streamline the VR development process, with the team actively soliciting feedback from the developer community regarding their most pressing needs. The announcement, made via social media, underscores Meta's continued commitment to fostering its expansive VR ecosystem.

This push for enhanced developer resources comes as the Meta Quest platform demonstrates significant growth. Over $2 billion has been spent on games and applications within the Meta Quest Store to date, with total payments increasing by approximately 12% in 2024. User engagement has also seen a substantial rise, with customers spending 30% more monthly time in VR in 2024 compared to the previous year.

Recent updates highlight Meta's focus on developer support, including the introduction of a new Case Management page in the Developer Dashboard for managing support tickets. Additionally, the company has released an Android Studio Plugin (ASP) to improve the development experience with Spatial SDK and is making its Interaction SDK available as a beta feature for Spatial SDK, providing consistent interactions for Unity and Unreal developers. The launch of the Quest 3S at a more accessible price point further expands the potential user base for developers.

Despite these advancements, the Meta Quest developer community has voiced concerns regarding backend performance issues, bugs, and regressions. Some developers have noted a "constant state of change" within the ecosystem, leading to frustrations with tools like MQDH and the store. This feedback aligns with the team's direct request for insights into the challenges developers face.

As Meta's CTO Andrew Bosworth indicated, 2025 is a pivotal year for the company's hardware and metaverse division, determining whether it will be seen as "the work of visionaries or a legendary misadventure." By actively engaging with and providing comprehensive resources to its developers, Meta aims to solidify its position as the dominant VR development platform, as affirmed by a GDC 2025 survey.
