New York Post Media Group to Launch 'The California Post' in Early 2026, Capitalizing on 90% Out-of-State Digital Readership

The New York Post Media Group (NYPMG) is set to launch a new media venture, The California Post, in early 2026, establishing its headquarters in Los Angeles. This strategic expansion aims to extend the reach of the venerable New York-based media brand to the West Coast market. "The New York Post Media Group plans to launch a new venture, The California Post, early next year," The Wall Street Journal reported, signaling a significant move in the national media landscape.

This westward expansion comes as the New York Post has demonstrated three consecutive years of profitability since fiscal year 2022. A key driver for this move is the significant portion of its existing audience residing outside New York; approximately 90% of the Post's digital readership is located beyond the New York media market, with Los Angeles representing the second-largest concentration of its readers. The New York Post Media Group, a subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, views California as a "vibrant, dynamic market" ripe for its unique journalistic approach.

The California Post will operate as a distinct entity under NYPMG, delivering content across multiple platforms including a daily print edition, mobile and desktop sites, video, audio, and social media. It is expected to replicate The New York Post's signature style of "bombastic reporting, sports coverage and celebrity gossip," but tailored with a distinctly Californian perspective. The new publication will also leverage NYPMG's national newsgathering capabilities to provide relevant national coverage to its West Coast audience.

News Corp veteran Nick Papps, who previously served as News Corp Australia's West Coast correspondent, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of The California Post, reporting to Keith Poole, the Editor-in-Chief of The New York Post. NYPMG plans to hire a dedicated team of editors, reporters, and photographers based in California to staff the new venture. The launch coincides with a high-profile period for California, including the 2026 elections, FIFA World Cup matches, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
