San Francisco, CA – Obsidian, the popular knowledge management tool, has rolled out a significant update to the Web Clipper, introducing a new "embedded mode" designed to streamline user workflows, particularly for those engaging with multiple tabs or utilizing AI models with longer processing times. The update addresses a previous limitation where switching browser tabs would reset the Web Clipper's popup interface.
According to Kepano, the creator of Obsidian, the new embedded mode allows the Web Clipper to operate directly within the web page rather than as a separate popup. "Previously each time you switched tabs it would reset the popup," Kepano stated in a recent social media post. He explained that while this behavior was "desirable if you're just clipping pages," it was "not ideal if you want to take notes in multiple tabs or run interpreter in parallel."
This enhancement is particularly beneficial for users leveraging the Web Clipper's "interpreter" feature, which often involves AI models that require more time for inference. "The new embedded mode is also more convenient if you use models that have a longer inference time (e.g. local models and reasoning models)," Kepano noted. He further elaborated on the improved user experience: "For this kind of workflow you would previously need to keep the popup open until the response is returned. Now you can let this happen in the background while you interact with the current tab, or another tab."
The update is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of research and content curation within Obsidian, allowing users to maintain focus and continuity across their web browsing and note-taking activities. This move aligns with Obsidian's philosophy of providing a flexible and user-controlled environment for managing information.
