Leading artificial intelligence developers OpenAI and Anthropic are projected to collectively add approximately $22 billion in net new run-rate revenue this year. This substantial figure represents nearly half of the total net new run-rate revenue anticipated from the entire public software universe, excluding the 'Magnificent Seven' tech giants, which is estimated at $46 billion. This striking statistic was highlighted by Tanay Jaipuria, citing data from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), underscoring the rapid financial impact of generative AI on the global economy.

"Wild stat: Anthropic and OpenAI by themselves will add $22B of net new runrate revenue this year. That's almost half of what the public software universe (ex MAG7) of over 100 companies will add in net new runrate revenue this year ($46B)." This projection, shared by Tanay Jaipuria via Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), underscores the significant concentration of new revenue generation within the burgeoning AI sector, highlighting a profound shift in market dynamics where a substantial portion of new software value creation now stems from advanced AI models and services.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has seen its revenue projections soar. Reports indicate the company expects to reach a $12 billion annual recurring revenue (ARR) and projects a total revenue of $12.7 billion for 2025, a substantial increase from $3.7 billion in 2024. Its strategy has largely focused on widespread consumer adoption through its popular chatbot and expanding enterprise solutions, with its ChatGPT Enterprise product growing rapidly.

Anthropic, known for its Claude AI models, has also demonstrated explosive growth, particularly in the enterprise sector. The company's annualized revenue reportedly hit $5 billion by July 2025, a significant jump from nearly $1 billion at the end of 2024 and $3 billion by May 2025. Anthropic's focus on selling AI models as a service to other companies has driven this surge, positioning it as a key player in business-to-business AI solutions.

Both companies have attracted massive investments, reflecting strong investor confidence in the generative AI market. OpenAI has secured substantial funding rounds, including a $40 billion round in March 2025, pushing its valuation to $300 billion. Anthropic has also seen its valuation climb, nearing $170 billion, with significant backing from tech giants like Google and Amazon. This influx of capital fuels their ambitious research and development, further accelerating the AI race.
