OpenAI has officially released its latest large language model, GPT-5, in August 2025, marking a significant advancement in artificial intelligence capabilities. The new model is now accessible to all ChatGPT users, with tiered access for Plus and Pro subscribers, and is set to be integrated across various Microsoft products, including Copilot.

GPT-5 is touted as a "PhD-level" AI system, demonstrating state-of-the-art performance across diverse domains such as coding, mathematics, writing, and visual perception. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has highlighted the model's enhanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities, indicating a shift towards more unified and efficient AI interactions. Notably, OpenAI researcher Sebastien Bubeck recently showcased GPT-5's ability to generate novel mathematical proofs, a feat that underscores its sophisticated problem-solving potential.

Amidst the official launch, a tweet by Sebastien Bubeck claimed a "96.7% winrate for gpt-5 playing werewolf." However, this specific statistic regarding GPT-5's performance in the social deduction game Werewolf remains uncorroborated by publicly available research. While large language models (LLMs) are actively being explored for their application in complex communication games, the 96.7% figure appears to be a misinterpretation of findings from other research.

For instance, a recent study on Bayesian social deduction in the game Avalon, a similar social deduction game, reported a "0.967" (96.7%) posterior probability of their GRAIL agent's superiority over another reasoning agent, not a direct win rate in a Werewolf game. Previous academic work, such as "Exploring Large Language Models for Communication Games: An Empirical Study on Werewolf" (Xu et al., 2023), has investigated earlier GPT models (GPT-3.5 and GPT-4) in Werewolf, discussing their emergent strategic behaviors and learning from experience, but did not cite such a high win rate for any specific model.

The discrepancy suggests that while AI's capabilities in complex strategic games are rapidly evolving, specific claims require careful verification against published research. GPT-5's release nonetheless signifies a major leap forward in AI, promising more intuitive and powerful applications across various sectors.
