Polygon's Heimdall v2 Hard Fork Slashes Transaction Finality to ~5 Seconds

Polygon, a leading layer-2 scaling solution, successfully implemented its Heimdall v2 hard fork on July 10, a significant upgrade to its Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network. This hard fork, described as the most complex since the network's launch in 2020, aims to drastically improve transaction finality and network stability. This technical overhaul replaces the network's aging consensus layer, migrating from Tendermint and Cosmos-SDK v0.37 to the more modern CometBFT and Cosmos-SDK v0.50. The primary objective was to address and eliminate legacy technical debt accumulated since Polygon's early PoS implementations in 2018-2019, creating a cleaner and more robust foundation for future development. The most impactful change for users and developers is the reduction in transaction finality from approximately 90 seconds to around five seconds.
