As Rajinikanth's career flourished, so did the public's interest in his personal life, leading to several rumored relationships. One of the most prominent was with actress Silk Smitha, a popular and often controversial figure in South Indian cinema known for her sensuous roles. They co-starred in several films, including Jeet Humari, Thanga Magan, Paayum Puli, and Sivappu Sooriyan.

Their on-screen chemistry and frequent collaborations fueled widespread speculation about an affair. Despite being known as a family man, reports suggested a strong inclination towards Smitha. Rajinikanth was reportedly immediately drawn to Latha and, in a rather direct manner, informed her of his intention to marry her. Latha, respecting tradition, insisted that he seek her parents' approval. With the mediation of her brother-in-law, comedian Y.G. Mahendran, Rajinikanth won over her family. The couple tied the knot on February 26, 1981, in a traditional ceremony at the Lord Balaji Temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
