RCMP Spokesperson Links Shift to Traditional Values with Extremism, Sparks Widespread Backlash

A Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) spokesperson recently stated that a sudden shift towards traditional values by someone who previously believed in equal gender rights "might be a sign they’re becoming more extremist." The remarks, made by Staff Sgt. Camille Habel to Canada’s state broadcaster, have ignited significant public debate and criticism across the country. The statement came in the context of recent arrests in Quebec related to ideologically motivated violent extremism.

Staff Sgt. Habel’s comments were part of an interview discussing radicalization following the arrest of four individuals in Quebec, two of whom were members of the armed forces, on charges related to an alleged plot to seize land. She explained that radicalization often manifests through isolation and changes in behavior or beliefs. "If someone you know believed in equal gender rights but all of a sudden are leaning towards traditional values, then that might be a sign that they’re becoming more extremist," she stated, adding that while extremist views are legal, violent action is not.

The statement quickly drew strong condemnation from various public figures and conservative groups, who accused the RCMP of labeling mainstream views as extreme. Critics argued that such broad characterizations could alienate a significant portion of the Canadian population and undermine trust in law enforcement. The backlash prompted the RCMP to issue a clarification in response to the growing controversy.

Another RCMP spokesperson, Marie-Eve Breton, later clarified the institution's stance, emphasizing that the RCMP "is in no way implying that embracing traditional values makes an individual radical or extreme." Breton explained that a shift towards extremism is indicated by "the observed and sometimes sudden change in one’s behaviour, beliefs or goals as well as tolerating the use of violence to achieve those goals." She stressed that each instance would be examined on a case-by-case basis, considering all indicators in their totality.
