Montreal, Quebec – Joseph Viviano, a prominent researcher affiliated with Mila, the Quebec AI Institute, recently highlighted a critical distinction in artificial intelligence measurements: the difference between epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty. In a recent social media post, Viviano articulated that while epistemic uncertainty can be diminished by acquiring more data, aleatoric uncertainty represents inherent, irreducible unknowns in experimental outcomes. He emphasized that advancements in robotics hold significant promise for greatly reducing or even eliminating this aleatoric uncertainty.

Viviano, a multidisciplinary researcher with a background spanning psychology, neuroscience, and machine learning, is known for his work on uncertainty estimation and prediction-powered inference within AI for science systems. His research, including contributions to Epistemic Neural Networks (ENNs) and GFlowNets, aims to enhance exploration and decision-making in complex systems by better quantifying what AI models "know" and "don't know."

Aleatoric uncertainty, often stemming from intrinsic randomness or noise in the environment and sensors, poses a fundamental challenge for reliable AI deployment, particularly in real-world applications like autonomous vehicles, medical diagnostics, and advanced manufacturing.
