San Jose, California – An investigation is underway following the death of a man who experienced a medical emergency after being detained by San Jose police officers on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. The incident occurred in the 400 block of South Buena Vista Avenue after officers responded to reports of a family disturbance and a man experiencing a drug overdose.
According to a media advisory from the San Jose Police Department (SJPD), officers arrived at approximately 8:07 AM to find the adult male "completely naked and acting erratic." After officers detained the individual, he began to suffer a medical emergency minutes later. Officers immediately summoned paramedics and initiated life-saving measures on the scene.
The man was transported to a local hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased. As is standard protocol for such incidents, a joint criminal investigation has been launched by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and the SJPD Homicide Unit. The case is also being monitored administratively by the SJPD Internal Affairs Unit, the City Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor.
The identity of the deceased will be released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner once his identity is confirmed and next of kin has been notified. The investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the man's death while in police custody.
