Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) has voiced strong opposition to a recently unveiled peace proposal for Ukraine, stating he is "highly skeptical it will achieve peace" due to what he described as "real problems" within the plan. His remarks, made via social media, highlight concerns over potential territorial concessions and the trustworthiness of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"This so-called ‘peace plan’ has real problems, and I am highly skeptical it will achieve peace," Senator Wicker stated. "Ukraine should not be forced to give up its lands to one of the world’s most flagrant war criminals in Vladimir Putin."
The 28-point proposal, widely reported to be a U.S.-backed initiative, suggests Ukraine cede territory, including Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk, and accept limitations on the size of its armed forces. It also proposes lifting sanctions on Russia and reintegrating it into the global economy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged the plan, describing it as a "vision" that presents a difficult choice between national dignity and maintaining a key partnership.
Senator Wicker further emphasized Ukraine's sovereign right to determine its defense capabilities. "The size and disposition of Ukraine’s armed forces is a sovereign choice for its government and people," he asserted. The plan's provision to limit Ukraine’s military to 600,000 personnel, a significant reduction from its current strength, has drawn criticism from various quarters.
Skepticism also extends to the feasibility of arms control with Russia. Wicker warned, "any suggestion that we can pursue arms control with a serial liar and killer like Putin should be treated with great skepticism." This reflects a broader concern among some U.S. and European officials regarding Putin's history of breaching international agreements. Other U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Mitch McConnell, have echoed Wicker's sentiments, with McConnell warning against "rewarding Russian butchery."
The proposed plan has generated considerable debate internationally, with European leaders and analysts expressing apprehension over its perceived pro-Russian bias and the potential implications for European security. Ukrainian officials are reportedly working on counter-proposals, aiming to defend Ukraine's legitimate interests and the foundations of European security amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts.
