Starship Technologies, a prominent autonomous delivery company, has solidified its position as a global leader, recently surpassing 9 million deliveries and announcing a strategic partnership with Uber Eats. This collaboration aims to roll out autonomous sidewalk robot delivery across multiple international markets, beginning in the UK in December 2025. The company's current fleet of 2,700 robots is set for significant expansion, with plans to reach over 12,000 by 2027.
The partnership with Uber Eats will leverage Starship's AI-powered robots, which operate at Level 4 autonomy and can complete deliveries within 30 minutes for distances up to two miles. Ahti Heinla, co-founder and CEO of Starship Technologies, stated, "Together, we’re building the infrastructure that will define the next generation of urban logistics." This initiative will extend to multiple European countries in 2026, with U.S. expansion slated for 2027.
Founded in 2014 by Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis, Starship Technologies has established the world's largest autonomous delivery network. The company's robots have operated in over 270 locations across seven countries, completing more than 100,000 road crossings daily. This extensive real-world experience has generated a vast dataset, continuously improving the AI models for safety and reliability.
In October 2025, Starship Technologies successfully closed a $50 million funding round led by Plural, bringing its total funding to over $280 million. This capital infusion is earmarked to accelerate U.S. market penetration, expand the robot fleet, and strengthen partnerships with major retailers. Taavet Hinrikus, Partner at Plural, noted, "Starship has quietly built the most successful autonomous technology company in the world."
The company's proven track record includes operating profitably at commercial scale, a distinction that sets it apart from many competitors still in pilot phases. Starship's robots are fully electric, contributing to sustainability efforts by preventing over 650 tonnes of CO2 emissions in European operations. These developments underscore Starship Technologies' commitment to redefining last-mile delivery through scalable, efficient, and eco-friendly autonomous solutions.
