KERRVILLE, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott has publicly commended President Donald Trump and his administration for their exceptionally swift response to the devastating floods that struck Central Texas, leading to a death toll exceeding 120. The governor highlighted the immediate deployment of federal resources, including the Coast Guard, and the rapid granting of a disaster declaration. "We cannot thank you enough for deploying the Coast Guard, deploying the resources... When I made a request for a disaster declaration, you and your Administration granted that. This is the fastest that I'm aware of, of any Administration responding," Governor Abbott stated.

The deadly floods, which began around July 4th, turned the Guadalupe River into a raging torrent, particularly impacting communities like Kerrville and the Camp Mystic area. Reports indicate over 170 individuals remain missing following what some have described as an "inland hurricane." The rapid rise of floodwaters caught many off guard, leading to significant loss of life and property.

In response to Abbott's request, President Trump approved a major disaster declaration, unlocking crucial federal aid, including grants for temporary housing and low-cost loans for uninsured property losses. The U.S. Coast Guard played a vital role in search and rescue operations, with personnel "literally saving lives right and left," according to Governor Abbott. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was also on the ground, coordinating federal support.

Despite the praise, the federal response has faced scrutiny regarding initial warnings and FEMA's operational capacity. The Washington Post reported that Kerr County did not utilize its most far-reaching cellphone alert system. Additionally, the New York Times revealed that FEMA's call centers experienced issues due to contract non-renewals, leading to unanswered calls from survivors. President Trump also drew criticism for his interaction with a reporter who questioned the lack of timely warnings.

Governor Abbott has pledged a long-term commitment to rebuilding the affected communities and has called for a special legislative session. This session aims to address and improve the state's flood warning and emergency communication systems, ensuring better preparedness for future natural disasters.
