San Francisco – TruSources, a new startup participating in TechCrunch Disrupt 2025's Startup Battlefield, is set to unveil its innovative on-device age verification technology. The company aims to address the significant privacy and security challenges posed by current age verification laws, which often require users to upload sensitive identification documents to the internet. TruSources' solution performs age checks directly on a user's device, ensuring personal data never leaves their phone.
The startup's approach directly counters the "privacy and security nightmare" often associated with traditional age verification methods, as highlighted by TechCrunch. Founder and Chief Technology Officer Sanjay Krishnamurthy, who previously worked on WhatsApp's core encryption engine, developed the technology to prevent scams and enhance user privacy. His system utilizes a custom machine learning model to detect deepfakes and verify identity without server-side data storage.
Age verification laws are increasingly taking effect across the U.S., UK, and Australia, creating a demand for compliant yet secure solutions. Many existing systems necessitate users sharing government-issued IDs and selfies, raising fears among privacy advocates about data monetization, loss, or breaches. TruSources' technology offers a critical alternative by allowing companies to meet compliance requirements without collecting sensitive user information.
The on-device verification can be integrated into various applications and websites, as well as corporate single-sign-on services. Krishnamurthy emphasized that his technology helps companies comply with "know your customer" (KYC) rules while safeguarding user privacy. TruSources also offers real-world applications, such as QR codes for age verification at establishments like bars, eliminating the need for physical ID presentation.
