Kyiv, Ukraine – President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially appointed Olha Stefanishyna, 39, as Ukraine's new ambassador to the United States on August 27, 2025. This significant diplomatic shift ends the six-year tenure of her predecessor, Oksana Markarova, at a pivotal moment for U.S.-Ukraine relations. Stefanishyna's appointment comes as Washington-backed efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia intensify.

President Zelenskyy signed the decree following the completion of formal procedures, outlining key tasks for the revitalized embassy. "In many ways, Ukraine’s long-term security depends on its relations with America," Zelenskyy stated in his evening address. He emphasized the importance of fully implementing agreements reached with Washington, particularly those concerning defense.

Stefanishyna brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, a position she held until July 2025. She also briefly served as Justice Minister in 2024. Her background includes playing a major role in Ukraine's integration into Western institutions and negotiations with the United States on various agreements.

The change in ambassadorship follows speculation and comes amidst a complex political landscape, including reported partisan criticism of Markarova from some U.S. Republicans. Markarova, who served as ambassador since February 2021, oversaw the flow of substantial U.S. aid during the full-scale war with Russia and was credited with strengthening bipartisan support for Ukraine in Congress. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Markarova's "difficult mission" and invited her to remain part of his team.

Among the critical agreements highlighted by Zelenskyy are proposals for providing weapons to Ukraine and supplying Ukrainian drones to the United States. He expressed anticipation for "swift progress in our relations." The appointment occurs as Ukrainian officials prepare for meetings with U.S. counterparts in New York on August 29, 2025, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war.
