Sierra County, CA – Investigators now believe that 78-year-old Gil Clark, who has been missing since August 14, was likely dragged deeper into the wilderness by wildlife after suffering a medical emergency. Officials with the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office in Northern California announced this development following an extensive search. Clark was last seen when a friend dropped him off in Downieville, approximately four miles from his home in Goodyears Bar.

Search and rescue teams, including assistance from Nevada County crews, conducted an extensive search along Highway 49 between the two towns, an area Clark was known to frequent. The wooded terrain behind his home was also thoroughly scoured. During these efforts, searchers observed significant bear activity and neighbors reported recent mountain lion sightings in the vicinity.

On November 14, an additional search expanded the focus area, leading to the discovery of clothing and personal items belonging to Mr. Clark. The following day, teams returned with four cadaver dogs for an exhaustive search, but no further trace of the 78-year-old was found. This discovery was crucial in shaping the investigators' current assessment of the case.

"Based on the investigation and personal items recovered, it is believed Mr. Clark likely suffered a medical emergency near his home that incapacitated him or resulted in his death," officials stated. "Evidence further indicates he was likely dragged from the area by a bear or mountain lion." The Sierra County Sheriff’s investigators confirmed the case remains open, and the department will continue to follow up on any new leads or tips.
