New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the presumptive Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City, continues to draw significant attention and criticism for his progressive policy proposals and controversial statements, particularly concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The latest public critique comes from Eyal Yakoby, who stated in a tweet on August 24, 2025, that there is "Another reason as to why you shouldn’t vote for Zohran."

Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist, recently secured the Democratic primary nomination, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. His platform centers on addressing New York City's affordability crisis, proposing initiatives such as rent freezes for stabilized apartments, free city bus service, universal childcare, and city-subsidized grocery stores. He plans to fund these ambitious programs by raising taxes on the wealthy, a proposal that has faced skepticism from figures like Governor Kathy Hochul.

A major point of contention for Mamdani has been his outspoken criticism of Israel and his support for Palestinian rights. He has accused the Israeli government of committing "genocide" and has stated he would honor an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to visit New York City. These positions have drawn sharp condemnation from various groups and political figures, including former President Donald Trump, who labeled Mamdani a "100% Communist Lunatic" and threatened federal funding cuts if he did not "behave."

Further controversy erupted when Mamdani appeared to defend the phrase "globalize the intifada," leading to strong criticism from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. The museum issued a statement condemning the exploitation of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising to "sanitize 'globalize the intifada'," noting that "since 1987 Jews have been attacked and murdered under its banner." Eyal Yakoby, a vocal critic, amplified this, tweeting on August 21, 2025, that Mamdani "breaks down in fake tears after the Holocaust Museum rightfully called him out."

Yakoby has also highlighted other aspects of Mamdani's campaign and policies, including what he terms Mamdani’s "radical policies" and his stance on charter schools. On August 6, 2025, Yakoby tweeted, "Zohran Mamdani says he’ll declare war on charter schools if elected mayor," questioning the impact on low-income Black and Hispanic students. These criticisms underscore the deep ideological divides surrounding Mamdani's vision for New York City as the general election approaches.
