Monroe, Louisiana – The Ouachita River has officially received its designation as a U.S. Marine Highway (M-167), encompassing 337 miles of its course. This strategic move, championed by Congresswoman Julia Letlow, is poised to unlock new economic development and significantly increase investment in Louisiana’s waterways infrastructure. Letlow announced the designation, which she had specifically requested from U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
This designation is part of a broader national initiative by the U.S. Department of Transportation to expand the Marine Highway Program. Secretary Duffy recently added 848 new miles of navigable waterways, bringing the total network to 27,139 miles across 35 designated routes. The program aims to enhance the nation's supply chains, reduce landside congestion, and support regional economies by promoting waterborne freight transportation.
The M-167 designation provides crucial eligibility for public and private entities along the Ouachita River to apply for federal grants. These grants are intended to facilitate infrastructure improvements and foster job creation in the region. Congresswoman Letlow emphasized, > "The Ouachita River is a wonderful natural resource with vast economic potential, especially in a region built by commodities which rely on reliable modes of transportation."
Randy Denmon, President of the Ouachita River Valley Association, echoed this sentiment, noting that the designation > "provides opportunities for public and private entities along the Ouachita River to apply for federal grants." The inclusion of the Ouachita River, co-sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Arkansas Waterways Commission, underscores its vital role in regional commerce. This development is particularly significant as the river's last comprehensive management study dates back over 120 years.
By shifting more freight to the waterway, the designation is expected to alleviate pressure on road and rail systems, improving overall transportation efficiency. The U.S. Marine Highway Program is currently accepting grant applications through July 15, 2025, offering immediate opportunities for local stakeholders. This federal recognition marks a pivotal moment for the Ouachita River, signaling a renewed focus on its potential to drive sustainable economic growth and enhance logistical capabilities in rural Louisiana and Arkansas.
