The Tamil Nadu government is significantly boosting industrial development in its southern districts by establishing several new industrial parks through the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT). This strategic initiative aims to attract investments and create employment opportunities across the region. A social media post from "Chennai Updates" highlighted this development, stating, > "Big boost for Southern Tamil Nadu. Govt is already setting up several Sipcots in those locations!!"
A key project driving this expansion is the Nanguneri SIPCOT Industrial Park in the Tirunelveli district, for which the state government has notified the acquisition of over 2,260 acres of land. An allocation of ₹871.86 crore has been approved specifically for acquiring 2,042.35 acres of private patta land to facilitate this large-scale industrial complex. This development follows Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's earlier announcement to establish industrial estates at Nanguneri and Moolaikkaraipatti.
The government's broader strategy focuses on decentralizing industrial growth beyond existing hubs, with new SIPCOT parks also planned or under development in areas like Thoothukudi (Allikulam) and Virudhunagar (E. Kumaralingapuram). These parks are designed to provide robust infrastructure, including land, power, and water, to support diverse manufacturing and industrial activities. Reports suggest an Indian major is considering setting up a footwear unit in Nanguneri, indicating strong industrial interest.
This expansion is expected to generate substantial job creation and foster balanced regional development, leveraging the southern districts' resources and workforce. The strategic proximity of these upcoming industrial zones to major ports like Thoothukudi and the Vizhinjam Port in neighboring Kerala is anticipated to further enhance their appeal to investors. SIPCOT aims to establish 30 new industrial parks across the state by 2030, underscoring Tamil Nadu's commitment to becoming a leading industrial hub.
