The activewear market is experiencing a significant shift, moving away from form-fitting leggings towards a preference for "big workout pants," a trend highlighted by The Wall Street Journal. The publication recently stated on social media, > "RIP leggings. We’re in the Big Workout Pant era now." This declaration underscores a broader industry movement, largely driven by Gen Z consumers, who are opting for comfort and versatility in their athletic apparel.
This evolving consumer preference has led to a notable decline in the popularity of traditional leggings. Google searches for leggings have consistently fallen since peaking in December 2020, and retail intelligence firm Edited reported that leggings accounted for 39 percent of bottoms assortments across activewear brands in Q1 2025, down from 47 percent in 2022. Overall, the active bottoms category saw a 12 percent dip in sales between April 2024 and 2025, signaling a clear market transition.
The shift is attributed to Gen Z's embrace of oversized, slouchier workout clothes, including baggy parachute pants, track shorts, and sweats. This generation prioritizes ease and looseness, contrasting with the decade-long supremacy of tight, color-blocked activewear sets favored by millennials. Beyond aesthetics, some consumers are also considering the potential health implications of microplastics found in synthetic activewear materials.
Major activewear brands are rapidly adapting to this new demand. Even Lululemon, long synonymous with second-skin leggings, has expanded its "away-from-body styles" and introduced looser options like the Align Palazzo pants. Nike, too, has broadened its offering of wide-leg and flared styles, emphasizing designs that seamlessly transition between athletic activities and everyday wear, such as its "Windrunner" pants and 24.7 collection.
While the trend towards looser fits gains momentum, leggings are not entirely obsolete. Many consumers, particularly millennials, still value their practicality for high-impact activities like running, climbing, or specific yoga poses where a tighter fit offers support and allows for better form visibility. However, the overall market indicates a clear preference for more relaxed and versatile workout attire, signaling a new era in athletic fashion.
