The Iron Beam system boasts an interception cost of approximately $2 per shot, utilizing only electricity, a stark contrast to the estimated $60,000 per interception for the traditional Iron Dome missile system. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett highlighted this economic advantage, stating, "The cost per interception: 2 dollars of electricity (no mistake here). This totally revolutionizes the war economy. We’ll simply bankrupt our enemies." This drastic reduction in cost is expected to have a profound impact on military strategy and resource allocation.

Designed to counter short-range threats, Iron Beam effectively intercepts rockets, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and mortars with a powerful, precise laser beam. It complements Israel's existing multi-layered air defense shield, which includes the Iron Dome, David's Sling, and Arrow systems, by targeting smaller projectiles and reducing the burden on more expensive kinetic interceptors. Rafael’s unique "adaptive optics" technology ensures stable targeting even over longer distances.

The development, spearheaded by the IMOD’s Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D), involved weeks of combat-simulated tests in southern Israel, proving its efficacy across comprehensive operational scenarios. Brigadier General Yehuda Elmakayes, head of the DDR&D R&D Unit, hailed the system as "the dawn of widespread laser capabilities," signaling a paradigm shift towards integrating directed energy weapons.
