Federal Halt on Major Wind Project Draws Sharp Rebuke from Senator Wiener

A significant offshore wind energy initiative, designed to power 350,000 homes, has faced a federal setback, prompting strong criticism from California State Senator Scott Wiener. The project, known as Revolution Wind, was poised to become one of the largest offshore wind farms in the United States before federal regulators initiated a new, extensive environmental review. Revolution Wind, a 704-megawatt project, is a joint venture between Danish energy giant Ørsted and New England utility Eversource. It was intended to supply clean electricity to Rhode Island and Connecticut, representing a substantial step towards regional renewable energy goals. The project had already secured power purchase agreements with the two states and was progressing through the federal permitting process.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), under the federal administration at the time, announced in August 2019 that it would conduct a deeper environmental analysis of the project. In a social media post, he stated, > "This wind project will provide energy to 350,000 people. They’re determined to increase cost of living & kneecap American prosperity & economic strength, which are very dependent on energy abundance." His remarks underscore a broader political divide on energy policy, contrasting renewable energy development with traditional fossil fuel-based energy abundance.

Critics of such federal actions argue that delays in renewable energy projects hinder job creation, stifle investment in clean energy infrastructure, and undermine efforts to combat climate change.
