Actress Emma Watson has recently articulated her hope for mutual respect and love, even among those with differing opinions, a sentiment that has been interpreted by some as a potential softening of her stance in the ongoing public disagreement with "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling over transgender rights. Watson's comments, made during a recent podcast interview, come years after she and other "Harry Potter" stars publicly supported transgender rights, contrasting with Rowling's views.
In an appearance on Jay Shetty's "On Purpose" podcast, Watson stated, "I just don't think these things are either or. I think it's my deepest wish that I hope people who don't agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don't necessarily share the same opinion with." This statement reflects her desire for open dialogue and maintaining personal connections despite ideological divides. Watson also expressed being "most upset" that a conversation between her and Rowling was "never made possible."
The rift between Watson, known for her role as Hermione Granger, and Rowling began in 2020 when the author made controversial remarks regarding gender identity, which many, including Watson and co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, criticized as transphobic. Watson had previously tweeted, "Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren't who they say they are."
J.K. Rowling has consistently maintained her position on gender identity, stating in April 2024 that she would "never forgive" the "Harry Potter" stars who "cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights." Despite this, Watson emphasized that her support for trans rights does not negate her personal experiences and affection for Rowling. She reiterated her belief that "there is no world in which I could ever cancel her out, or cancel [the movies] out for anything."
