Klarna, the global digital bank and payments provider, is experiencing significant demand for its new flexible debit card, with its US launch alone garnering over one million sign-ups within just 11 weeks. The card, designed to offer consumers greater control over their finances, is progressively rolling out across key markets including the UK and various European countries. Sebastian Siemiatkowski, Co-founder and CEO of Klarna, expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, > "Så roligt att så många är intresserade av våra nya kort. Känns ju som vi är ngt riktigt bra på spåren!!!" (So much fun that so many are interested in our new cards. Feels like we are onto something really good!!!).
The Klarna Card operates as a debit-first product, allowing users to pay instantly with their own funds, while also integrating flexible payment options such as Pay in 3, Pay Later, and longer-term financing for larger purchases. Powered by Visa Flexible Credential, the card is accepted at over 150 million Visa merchant locations worldwide, both online and in-store. Notably, it comes with no foreign exchange fees and is linked to a free Klarna Balance account for managing funds.
This new offering represents Klarna's strategic move to challenge traditional banking and credit card models by providing a transparent alternative without hidden fees. Siemiatkowski has previously highlighted the card's aim to restore consumer choice, stating, "Our new Klarna Card brings that choice back, giving consumers control over their money again." The card's success builds on Klarna's existing portfolio, with card-based products already accounting for 10% of its global payment volume.
The high interest has even led to playful remarks from the CEO regarding access to the card. In his recent tweet, Siemiatkowski humorously noted the overwhelming demand, adding, > "Får nog höja insatsen från att bara skriva ja till att sådana här kreativa memes för att få en kod. Annars tar de ju slut! Bra rolig meme för att få kod 😀" (May have to raise the stakes from just saying yes to such creative memes to get a code. Otherwise, they'll run out! Good fun meme to get a code 😀). This informal comment underscores the significant public engagement and rapid adoption of Klarna's latest financial product.
