Kyle Samani, Managing Partner at Multicoin Capital, has reiterated his long-standing advocacy for 100% day-one token unlocks for portfolio companies, asserting that this approach is the "only way to get true price discovery" in the cryptocurrency market. Samani highlighted Solana as a project that came closest to implementing this model, albeit with "one massive cliff at month 9."

"FWIW I’ve been advocating for 100% day 1 unlock for years with port cos. Only way to get true price discovery. The team that came closest to doing this was… Solana! One massive cliff at month 9," Samani stated on social media.

Samani's position suggests that immediate liquidity and full token circulation from the outset are crucial for the market to accurately value a project's token without artificial scarcity or delayed supply shocks. This contrasts with traditional vesting schedules, which gradually release tokens over time to founders, team members, and early investors, often to prevent large sell-offs and ensure long-term commitment.

Solana, a high-performance blockchain, has experienced significant token unlock events throughout its history. While not a 100% day-one unlock, the project did have a substantial "cliff unlock" in January 2021, which saw 320 million SOL tokens enter circulation, dramatically increasing the circulating supply. This event, occurring approximately nine months after its mainnet launch in April 2020, aligns with Samani's reference to a "massive cliff at month 9."

The debate around token unlock schedules remains a critical topic in the crypto industry, with implications for market stability, investor confidence, and project development. While some argue that controlled vesting protects nascent projects from immediate price volatility, proponents of day-one unlocks, like Samani, believe it fosters a more transparent and efficient market by reflecting genuine supply and demand dynamics from the outset. Solana's approach, featuring early large-scale unlocks, has been a case study in this ongoing discussion.
